Endodontic Treatment

If your tooth is infected or irreversibly inflamed, a root canal may save it from needing to be extracted. Infection or inflammation is generally caused by:

  • A deteriorating filling or crown
  • A deep cavity
  • Trauma – i.e. knocks, falls
  • Gum disease (periodontal disease)
  • Cracks or chips in the tooth
  • Extreme tooth wear
  • Extensive dental work

If your tooth cannot heal itself, it will become irreversibly inflamed. If a root canal is not performed, the tooth will need to be extracted which can lead to biting and chewing problems. The extra space can cause other teeth to move from their usual positions.

HOW DO I KNOW I NEED A ROOT CANAL?

We have several ways to diagnose whether our patients need a root canal including:

  • Pain
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Tooth discolouration
  • Swelling
  • Soreness in the gums surrounding the teeth

If you experience any of these symptoms, please see a dentist as soon as possible to ensure the correct treatment can be planned and implemented.

WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Root canal treatment involves cleaning out the bacteria and dead tissue from inside a tooth. This sometimes takes several visits. Some patients may be referred to an endodontist, depending on the severity of the infection. Endodontists have special training and qualifications in root canal treatment. Once the infection is treated, the root canals are filled with special materials.

Root canal treatment has proved very effective and successful for many years and alleviates pain for most people.

Please note: All invasive or surgical procedures carry risks.  Some people may not be suitable candidates for this procedure.  Your dentist will discuss all risks prior to commencing any treatment.
