Tooth removal
A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth. The most common reasons to remove a tooth include damage caused by a fracture, severe decay or to resolve overcrowding in the mouth.
TYPES OF EXTRACTION
Simple extractions are usually performed under local anaesthetic and only require the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth.
Surgical extractions involve the removal of teeth that are difficult to access. This might be because they have broken under the gum or are not fully erupted. Occasionally, the tooth may have to be split into multiple pieces for easy removal.
The procedure is not painful – the patient only experiences the pressure of the tooth moving. Withers Dental performs most extractions in the dental chair. We make the experience as comfortable as possible. Please tell your dentist if you are feeling nervous so options such as calming medications can be arranged. It is also possible to perform the extraction under general anaesthetic at St Andrew’s Hospital in Toowoomba.
