Why is a Mouthguard necessary?

Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injuries. These injuries can be minimized or avoided by wearing a protective, custom-fitted mouthguard. Wearing one helps to absorb and spread the impact of a hit to the face which may otherwise result in injury to your mouth or jaw. Dental injuries are painful and may require recovery time from school or work and can be permanently disfiguring. The cost of potential complex and lengthy dental treatment can far exceed the cost of a custom-fitted mouthguard.

Custom-fitted mouthguards should be worn during training and playing of sports where there is any possibility of contact to the face, including, but not limited to Rugby Union, Rugby League, hockey and skateboarding

Why a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard?

Custom-fitted mouthguards are made from an impression of your mouth which is used to create a plaster model of your teeth. This helps the dentist/hygienist provide the best fitting mouthguard for your mouth.

Your custom-fitted mouthguard will be:

  • Comfortable
  • Well-fitting
  • Allows you to speak clearly
  • Won’t shift or fall out
  • Won’t restrict your breathing

Over the counter (boil and bite) mouthguards are less effective than a custom-fitted one as they do not as well fitting and the material used is not as strong as the custom-fitted mouthguard.
