X-ray Imaging

Dental X-rays are sometimes necessary to help to visualise diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissue. These images show cavities, cancerous or benign masses, hidden wisdom teeth and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Any problems can then be treated early in their development saving you money, unnecessary discomfort, and maybe even your life.

When you are a new patient at Withers Dental we will take X-rays as part of the initial examination. This establishes a baseline record from which to compare changes that may occur over time. If you can provide recent x-rays from your previous dentist at your examination we may not require new images.

The dosage of x-ray radiation received by a dental patient is small, equivalent to a few days worth of background environmental radiation, or similar to the dose received during a cross-country airplane flight. The frequency of X-rays depends on your medical and dental history and current condition. Some patients may need X-rays as often as every six months; others with no recent dental or gum disease and who visit their dentist regularly may get X-rays only every couple of years.
