Wisdom Teeth Removal
< back
Wisdom teeth generally cause problems when they emerge partially through the gum.
The most common reasons for removing wisdom teeth are:
- Tooth decay – bacteria and food particles collect around impacted wisdom teeth causing decay.
- Gum infection – local infections may result in bad breath, pain, and swelling and if untreated, infection can spread.
- Pressure pain – frequent pain can result and may cause erosion of your existing molars.
- Orthodontic reasons – Movement of teeth from impacted wisdom teeth can compromise earlier orthodontic treatments.
- Prosthetic reasons – impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe irritation with existing dentures and may lead to new dentures being required.
- Cyst formation – cysts surrounding wisdom teeth, if untreated, can lead to bone destruction and loss of nearby teeth and in some cases lead to tumours developing.
