Dental X-Rays

    < back

Dental radiographs, commonly referred to as X-rays, are pictures of the teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to screen for and help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. It is possible for both tooth decay and periodontal disease to be missed during a clinical exam, and radiographic evaluation of the dental and periodontal tissues is a critical part of the comprehensive oral examination. X-ray pictures can show cavities, cancerous or benign masses, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Dental X-rays may also be done as follow-up after dental treatments. These x-rays are called bitewings or periapicals depending on the view.

OPG

An Orthopantomogram or OPG is a panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. It shows a two-dimensional view of a half-circle from ear to ear.
OPG’s are used by Dentists to provide information on:
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Periodontal bone loss
  • Finding the source of dental pain
  • Assessment for the placement of dental implants
  • Orthodontic assessment
The most common use is to determine the status of wisdom teeth.

Lateral Cephalometric Radiograph

A Lateral Cephalometric Radiograph or Lat Ceph is an X-ray taken of the side of your face with very precise positioning so that various measurements can be made to determine the current and future relationship of your mandible (jaw) to your maxilla (cheek bone) and therefore the nature of your bite. This helps to plan any orthodontic treatment if it is necessary.
