Composite fillings
< back
If you have a cavity in a tooth, broken fillings, mercury fillings, or amalgam fillings, Composite Resin fillings are well worth discussing you’re dentist. Composite fillings are strong, durable, and make for a very natural look. Composite can be made in a wide range of tooth colours allowing near invisible restoration of teeth.
Most of us have had amalgam fillings (silver) or gold filling restorations. Metal fillings were effective, but very noticeable and tended to blacken in colour over time. Silver fillings can easily be removed and replaced with tooth colored fillings.
Other than the improved aesthetics of the filling material, another advantage is that they are bonded to teeth and this helps to strengthen a damaged tooth something a conventional amalgam filling would not provide.
Composite resins are ideal for small to medium sized fillings. They are not recommended when restoring large cavities where there is not enough support from existing tooth structure. Instead, crowns, inlays and onlays are an ideal treatment option for the restoration of a tooth which has lost a large amount of tooth structure due to decay or tooth fracture.
