Veneers
< back
Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or resin composite that are bonded to the front of the teeth. They can be used to mask teeth that are gappy, crooked, chipped, too short or uneven. These veneers appear very natural and can also be used to lighten the appearance of some teeth.
Porcelain veneers resist staining and chipping much better than resin composite veneers. Resin composite veneers can be used as an interim or short term fix for aesthetically unpleasing teeth as they are usually less costly.
Your dentist may need to remove up to 1.5mm of enamel from your teeth to accommodate for these veneers. There are some veneers which do not require any drilling in order to remove tooth structure. Instead the veneers are constructed to be placed on top of the teeth. As a result, treatment is less invasive and may be less time-consuming.
In the past, the only way to correct dental imperfections was to cover the tooth with a crown. Today there are several alternatives: crown, composite resin bonding, porcelain veneers or orthodontics.
Who is a candidate for porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers can correct:
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Chipped or worn teeth
- Diastemas (spaces between the teeth)
- Permanently stained or discoloured teeth
Porcelain veneers and dental crowns in many cases can be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment. Teeth that are heavily compromised by large fillings may not be suitable candidates for veneers. A more substantial crown may be required in these cases.
